Basketball stars of the future will be able to attend a special training programme, thanks to a grant from a Hertfordshire county councillor.

County Councillor Geoff Churchard (Sandridge Division) has allocated £250 from his locality budget to BCW Sports Services on behalf of Oaklands College, St Albans, for a special basketball training programme.

The programme is unique in giving boys and girls the chance to gain a variety of recognised academic qualifications while maximising their basketball potential.

Cllr Churchard said: "I'm always happy to support sports coaching for young people. It's good for their fitness and it's good to join a team."

A total of £10,000 is available to each of the 77 members of Hertfordshire County Council to spend on worthwhile community projects in their area.

Locality budgets were launched in July 2009, with funding to be used for worthy social, economic or environmental causes in Hertfordshire. For information on how to apply for funding under the scheme, visit www.hertsdirect.org/localitybudgets
