Local elections take place in St Albans on Thursday, 3rd May 2012. And if you're not already registered to vote today is the last day that you can register on the electoral register.

Elections will take place in 18 of the 20 wards for St Albans City and District Council. There are no elections at this time in the Colney Heath and Sandridge wards.

To find out who your local Councillors are, and where your local polling station is, visit St Albans City & District Council's Local Information Services website and by simply typing in your postcode you'll have all the information at your disposal.

And if you're interested to see the full candidate list of those standing for election in the 18 wards undertaking elections across the District, download the pdf of nominated candidates under the title 'Election Candidates' on this page of the council's website.

To vote on 3rd May, you need to be on the electoral register and be:

• aged 18 or over on polling day

• a British, Irish, EU or qualifying Commonwealth citizen.

Mike Lovelady, the Electoral Registration Officer for the Council, said: "You must be on the electoral register to have your say on who sits on your council. If you have recently moved to the area, or moved house it is important to make sure that you register at your new address otherwise you will be unable to vote.

"It only takes a few minutes to complete a registration form, but you must make sure we receive it by Wednesday 18 April."

Even if you will be unable to make it to the polling station on May 3 you will still be able to vote, provided you apply to vote by post or proxy.

You can print off the forms to register to vote and to apply to vote by post or proxy at Electoral Commission's website at http://www.aboutmyvote.co.uk/

Alternatively the registration forms are available from the District Council's Electoral services team by calling (01727) 819291, 819 294 or 819545 or emailing elections@stalbans.gov.uk

Applications to vote by post must be received by the Council by 5pm today, Wednesday 18 April and to vote by proxy by 5pm on Wednesday 25 April.

Polling stations across St Albans will be open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday, 3rd May 2012.
