The development of a local open space and play area is to go ahead as planned, with the support of a county councillor.

Councillor Rob Prowse (St Albans East) has allocated £1500 to St Albans District Council from his locality budget fund towards the cost of making recreational improvements to Longacres Open Space, including the provision of more benches.

Development of the area will be based on feedback from local residents and young people and will feature a teenage activity area, improved facilities for 4-15 year olds thoughout the open space, a fitness trail and outdoor gym and a picnic area.

Councillor Prowse said: "Local people have needed a refurbished play area for years. This project delivers the play area and my locality funding allows it to be completed as originally designed."

A total of £10,000 is available to each of the 77 members of Hertfordshire County Council to spend on worthwhile community projects in their area.

Locality budgets were launched in July 2009, with funding to be used for worthy social, economic or environmental causes in Hertfordshire. For information on how to apply for funding under the scheme, visit www.hertsdirect.org/localitybudgets
