A motion to support the future of the household waste recycling centre in St Albans was unanimously passed at a St Albans City and District Council meeting last night.

The news comes in response to a petition to maintain the future of the household recycling centre in St Albans by Councillor Simon Grover of The Green Party, who represents St Peters Ward. Over 1,900 locals added their voice and signature to the petition, which calls for Hertfordshire County Council NOT to close or shrink the household recycling depot in St Albans.

Following on from the meeting, Mr Grover emailed supporters the good news that the Council is calling upon Herts County Council to protect the St Albans recycling centre, as well as the ones in Harpenden and Garston.

In his email, Mr Grover states that during the meeting the Portfolio Holder for the Environment suggested adding some more points to his wording, which he was happy to accept.

Mr Grover reports the motion carried out as:

"This Council notes the petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/SSAHRD which currently has over 1900 signatures, and which reads "I call on Hertfordshire County Council NOT to close or shrink the household recycling depot in St Albans."

This Council acknowledges the strength of feeling in support of the household waste recycling centre in St Albans and the heavy demand catered for across our District by this, and neighbouring sites at Garston and Harpenden. This Council recognises that each of these are valuable and well used facilities, crucial for promoting recycling and the prevention of fly-tipping across the whole City and District.

This Council calls on County Hall to continue operating a centre of at least the present size within the boundaries of the City, and further urges that centres are provided in or nearby to Garston and Harpenden, to continue much needed service provision in the north and south of the District."

Mr Grover ended his email to supporters by thanking them for signing the petition and stating that he has arranged for it to be submitted to Herts County Council at their next full meeting later in the year.
