A free crime mapping service gives local residents the opportunity to understand the levels and types of crimes being committed in their area.

The service, Police UK, combines a nationwide crime database with mapping features. By putting in the St. Albans postcode AL1, it's possible to see all 305 crimes reported in January 2011. Those include:

  • 118 for anti-social behaviour
  • 28 violent crimes
  • 18 burglaries
  • 7 robberies
  • 6 vehicle crimes
  • 128 "other offenses"
The service is offered through a partnership between data.gov.uk, direct.gov and crimestoppers. It's useful for identifying crime hotspots and understanding what crimes are prevalent in which areas of the City and District.
