Bored of knob-head estate agents. How and where do you look for private rentals?

Thank very much. Me and my partner are looking to spend £800pcm on a 1 bedroom flat in st albans. Must be modern and clean. We don't have any pets and neither of us are smokers. If anyone can help in any way i would be so grateful as i am sick to my back teeth of estate agents and their referencing fee's etc. Thanks everyone x x
