Donations and investments have been pouring in to help James Hannaway, who restored the Rex Cinema in Berkhamsted to it's former glory and wants to repeat the achievement in St. Albans, purchase the former Odeon Cinema in London Road.

The St. Albans Review and the Herts Advertiser are both reporting that Hannaway has secured £911,000, which is just £89,000 short of the necessary £1 million he needs.

Once the funds are raised and the building purchased from developers, Hannaway will need around £2 million in further funding to restore the building but seems undaunted by the task - putting all his energy, for the time being, into securing the building before it's lost forever.

I am so excited by this, not least because we will get a great cinema right in the heart of St Albans, but also because this is what the people want. They are the ones who are digging into their pockets and funding this amazing dream. Helped on by Mr Hannaway and his expertise and the Civic Society lead by Marion Hammant, the people of St Albans have voted with their own money and from the heart. It will be a VERY proud moment when the Alpha Picture Palace opens its doors once again to the cinema-going public.
