Little Wonders, a popular independent toy retailer, faces an uncertain future after the Maltings Shopping Centre, where the small toy shop has been located for around 8 years, gave owners and staff just 30 days notice that the lease will not be renewed.

A thoughtful and moving notice posted in the window of the shop on Saturday read, in part,

"It is with deep regret that I must pass on the message that Little Wonders is leaving the Maltings. Our Landlords have found a big branded client whom will pay more rent for our premises."

"As an extremely hard working family run business we have enjoyed every minute working here over the last 8 years providing a much loved environment for families to play and purchase the best world wide traditional toys."

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our beloved customers over the years, and those many smiley young faces whom enjoyed playing with our toys, and regret every heart felt tear shed as they had to leave."

"We have laughed with sympathy at every "accident" with toddlers during their potty training months, cried every time we upset a customer in the rare times any product we sold or service we gave could not meet their expectations and beamed with delight and pride every year we finished our Christmas window and saw the magical look on the faces of passer-bys."

"We spent every Christmas day thinking of all the excited squeals of delight from all the young children opening our amazing hand picked toys...."

Owners of Little Wonders have appealed for help or advice from any local person, business or lease holder who might be able to help them relocate. Contact Elena Ripoll on 01727 863 800

A petition has been set up to help save Little Wonders, if everyone could please sign it, we'd appreciate the help in this fight. It's really not fair, and especially to a family who have put so much money and time and passion into the trade. This is a horrible way to see it go. http://tinyurl.com/33u6rlz

Lets not give up yet - if enough of us complain and make loud noises we may be able to save Little Wonders. I can't imagine Early Learning would be able to cater for the customers that use Little Wonders - a shop with assistants that like to see you even if you are just browsing as there will come a time when you will need to buy. Yet again the big chain "bully boys" try to push another independant out of the area - we musn't let them

This is awful. Little Wonders is a truly wonderful shop and I always know I will find something special for my little girl in there. At this rate there will be no independent shops gracing the centre of our town. What can we do to help them and stop this happening?

Yet another much-loved shop gets pushed out by greedy landlords. At the other end of St Peters Street nearly all the shops are now empty. Yet the Council haven't even considered using their powers under the Sustainable Communities Act to protect valuable businesses from rent hikes. St Albans is in danger of becoming a chainstore bore.

That's a terrible shame - the council did a similar thing to Riders although this sounds even worse. It's like they are deliberately trying to rip the heart of the city by making it hard for the independents to operate. I'll certainly boycott whoever takes their place.
