Review: The Courtyard Cafe
By StAlbansRobin | Friday, January 29, 2010, 15:00
Today I dropped in to the Courtyard Cafe, located next door to the Museum of St. Albans on Hatfield Road, for breakfast and coffee on my way to a meeting at work. Although I'd passed the building, a former Synagogue that, in addition to the Courtyard Cafe, also houses a Yoga hall, I'd never had the chance to stop in. And I'm glad I did.

Scrambled Eggs on a Mushroom with Coffee at the Courtyard Cafe
From the moment I entered, I was struck by how cozy and stylish the Courtyard Cafe is. The walls are lined with works, for sale, by local artists. The furniture is probably best described as comfortable "shabby chic" - think old tables, mismatched chairs, wooden floors, stylish cushions and a large leather sofa in the corner. Pleasant music, which I find myself at pains to describe as I didn't recognise it but did find it enjoyable, filled the cafe. The staff, too, were friendly and eager to please.
The food, which is all prepared from scratch in the small on site kitchen, is primarily sourced from Earthworks, a local charity that works with people of all ages and abilities, including those with learning difficulties or from disadvantaged backgrounds, to learn horticulture skills. The coffee served is all fairtrade.
I had scrambled eggs, served on a large portobello mushroom, served with bread, was delicious. In addition to breakfast, the Courtyard Cafe serves lunch, which includes the option of fresh made soup of the day, and afternoon tea. There's also free wifi - just ask for the password.
I could imagine the Courtyard Cafe becoming a favourite place for those who are looking for a pleasant place to sit around for an hour or two reading the weekend newspapers whilst having a bite to eat and a couple of cups of coffee. That's certainly what I'll be doing next time I get the chance.
Comments
I was just wondering about how good the coffee is there and the prices. As a coffee shop, would it be a better place than somewhere like Costa or Starbucks to have good coffee and chat with friends? Thanks very much!
